MONASTERY OF ST. BENEDICT
Founded in 1590 by monks from Bahia, the Benedictine Monastery of Rio de Janeiro was built at the request of the inhabitants of the newly founded city of São Sebastião. In the center of the great metropolis, it remains a place of silence and prayer. The visit is restricted to the Church of Our Lady of Montserrat, attached to the Monastery. Details like the art nouveau iron gate and the gold-covered rosewood altars are impressive. From Monday to Friday, at 7:15 a.m., solemn masses with Gregorian chant are held, which also take place on Saturdays at 8:00 AM and on Sundays at 10:00 AM.
