CATHEDRAL OF SAN SEBASTIÃO OF RIO DE JANEIRO

The Metropolitan Cathedral of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro is the new Cathedral or main church of the City. It was inaugurated in 1976, when it replaced the Igreja do Carmo or former Cathedral in Praça XV de Novembro.

This great church in brutalist modernist style (that is, in apparent concrete) is often confused by those not warned with a huge concrete bucket upside down. But in architectural terms it can be described as a large volume of cone trunk, with shelf closure or inclined concrete scales between beams and septs equally of apparent concrete.

Seen from outside or inside, one can notice that there are wide bands of colored stained glass with images and symbols of Catholic worship.

These four stained glass lines are each oriented toward one of the cardinal points, and converge to ceiling, forming a cross, noted by those who enter the church and look up.

As it is perceived externally, the plant or floor of the temple has circular format, with dimensions of 106 meters of diameter and counting with 96 meters of height.
